PAST PROJECTS
WWF International:
Localisation Horizon Scan
Flamingo were commissioned by WWF International to provide high level strategic foresight relating to localisation of funding streams. The research process, over 5 months, included desk research into current trends and specific practices, and key informant interviews with internal and external interviews. The study’s conclusion presented evidence-based scenarios for the next 10 years, alongside an analysis of the high-level strategic implications for WWF, with recommendations that have fed into WWF International’s Roadmap 2030. This work was led by Rachel and undertaken in partnership with Debbie Ball.
Funder Due Diligence Reviews: AidsFonds and Robert Carr Fund
Since 2021 Flamingo has been supporting both AidsFonds and the Robert Carr Fund as part of a team of due diligence assessors led by Dermott McDonald. With both funders, the assessment processes have required sensitivity to the needs of organisations of, and for, key populations. Many of these organisations working in very difficult and hostile contexts. We have worked closely with AidsFonds Youth, HandsOff and Love Alliance programmes to design an assessment process which is thorough and responsive to capacity constrained organisations. Similarly, we have worked with the Robert Carr on assessing, and providing findings and analysis of applicants for their 2021 and 2024 funding rounds.
ActionAid UK: Flexible Funding Learning Review
Having worked with ActionAid to design and deliver two rounds of their 12-month Women’s Rights Fellowship for Women’s Rights Organisations in 2019 and 2020, I was excited to work with my co-researcher, Aasha Ramesh, on this learning of ActionAid’s Flexible Funding funding model. Using feminist research approaches, we undertook a number of interviews with a broad range of Women’s Rights Organisations and ActionAid staff, and combined this with a desk review of Flexible Funding Models to produce a final report and run a final reflection session. August – September 2021.
Eurasian Harm Reduction Association: Online training course
This project was to design and deliver a bespoke online training course: “Resilience and Sustainability for CSOs”, for the Eurasian Harm Reduction Association. The audience were small CSOs working with key populations (e.g. LGBTQI+, HIV+, Sex Workers) in the CEECA region. Together with a team of 3 other trainers and funding specialists I led the planning and design of the training programme based on feedback from the participants. We ran live training sessions, recorded a series of specialist webinars, and delivered 1-to-1 coaching, in English and Russian, to support participants in strategies for sustainability. Sept-Dec 2020
Amnesty International UK: Institutional, Trust and Foundation Research
The research was commissioned by AI UK’s Major Donor team, to feed into the fundraising strategy supporting their new 8 year organisational strategy. Working with Flamingo’s Associate, Dermott McDonald, we interviewed human rights donors, peer organisations to AI UK, and internal stakeholders. We also carried out a donor mapping work. Our findings were shared in a recommendations report, and we facilitated three reflection workshops with AI UK staff. August 2022 – January 2023.
Mercy Corps: Researching Commercial Contracting with European Donors
Gathering information through desk research and key informant interviews with donors and peer organisations, myself and my consultancy colleague were able to provide Mercy Corps Europe with an in depth analysis of commercial contracting opportunities with bilateral donors across Europe - and the EU itself. Based on this information we were able to identify for MCE where the opportunities might be, and make recommendations for next steps. This assignment took place during 2023.
